Frequently Asked Questions

How to Use Get a Second Opinion

What is Discovery? The discovery tool lets you search for a medical drug, condition, or a combination of both to find the best option for your specific profile. It analyzes vast amounts of dynamic data — such as research studies, medical journals, reviews, and user feedback — against the patient’s unique characteristics, including age, sex at birth, weight, pre-existing conditions, and current medications. The tool then recommends the best options tailored to the individual situation, considering factors like cost, efficacy, safety, time on the market, and more. These data-driven suggestions can save you days, or even weeks, of research.
What is Planner? The planner tool reviews a patient’s current medications for specific conditions and suggests modifications to reduce side effects, lower cost, improve efficacy, and minimize the number of medications if possible. While it’s easy for you to use, the tool performs a complex analysis, running thousands of permutations tailored to your unique profile to find the best medication set based on scientific data. Once the analysis is complete, you’ll receive an email notification, and the report will clearly outline which medications the system recommends keeping and which ones could be optimized for better results, backed by specific research recommendations.
What should I do with my results? Discuss the report with your healthcare provider! While they may agree with our findings or consider new data we present, remember that our reports serve as a second opinion, offering options and talking points for an informed discussion. Providers are often busy and may be limited in the drugs they can prescribe, so their ability to fully engage with the report may be constrained. The research and data behind our reports are complex and constantly updated, so some findings may be too new for your provider to be fully aware of.

Our goal is to empower you to advocate for your health. Your physician has access to comprehensive healthcare data, lab results, and your medical history, which we do not. This means our top recommendation might differ from theirs, and that's okay. Use our report to address concerns and understand why your physician’s recommendation is better for you.

Our reports are data-driven and accurate, designed to facilitate a productive conversation with your healthcare provider and ensure you play an active role in your and your loved ones’ well-being.
Where can I find my previously generated reports? Select the REPORTS tab in the top menu when viewing the website on a computer, or in the menu at the upper right of your display on a mobile device.

How and What It Works For

How does Get a Second Opinion determine the best recommendations for my profile? Our service uses advanced algorithms and extensive medical databases to analyze your health profile and provide personalized medication recommendations. For example, if the patient is overweight, we'll suggest medications that are less likely to cause weight gain or may even promote weight loss. If there is anxiety and a need for seasonal allergy medication, we'll recommend options that effectively treat allergies, are cost-effective, and are least likely to worsen anxiety. Our system considers factors like age, biological sex at birth, Body Mass Index, existing pre-conditions, and current medications to recommend treatments that are both effective and compatible with the patient’s overall health.
Do you provide physician consults with your reports? Not at the current time, but we hope to one day.
Do you support homeopathic remedies, herbal supplements and vitamins? Not at the current time.
How often are your medical data sources updated? Our sources are continuously updated based on the latest medical research and clinical guidelines.
Can I update my health profile? Yes, you can update your health profile at any time to ensure our recommendations remain accurate and relevant.
Do you support multiple medical conditions? Yes, our service can provide research recommendations for multiple conditions, considering the interactions between different medications and health issues.
Can results change over time for the same search? Yes. Our reports are generated using dynamic data at the time of your search. Subsequent future Second Opinions with the same parameters may yield different recommendations due to newly available relevant data. This is a feature, not a bug - it reflects our commitment to providing up-to-date, data-driven insights.

Example: Changing Data on Health Recommendations.

Consider the evolving stance on red wine consumption:
  • Past: Studies highlighted the benefits of moderate red wine intake, citing antioxidants.
  • Present (2024): More comprehensive research suggests no amount of alcohol offers health benefits.
This example illustrates how scientific understanding evolves with new data, directly impacting health recommendations.

Our system continuously integrates the latest research to ensure you receive the most current, evidence-based data.

Membership and Billing

How much does the service cost? Please visit our pricing page for detailed information on our subscription plans and any available discounts.
How do I purchase more Discovery or Planner tokens? Go to “My Account” section, select the “Membership” tab, then click “Add Tokens."
What happens to my unused tokens? As long as you maintain your yearly membership, unused tokens from the former year will be re-credited to your account for the new year. Effectively, as long as you constantly maintain your paid annual membership with Get a Second Opinion, your unused tokens will continue to roll over and accumulate.
Can I cancel my membership? Memberships are paid for the year in advance and are non-refundable. Thus when you become a member for that year, you cannot cancel within that year. You can cancel your renewal, so you cease being a member at the end of the pre-paid year, and any unused tokens will be forfeited at that time.
